Regulation of abscisic acid metabolism in relation to the dormancy and germination of cereal grains

Abstract: Seed dormancy is of particular importance in the cultivation of cereals, as it directly affects the quality of crop yield. If the dormancy period is too short, this may lead to pre-harvest sprouting, whereas a dormancy period that is too long may cause uneven germination; both of these scenarios are associated with economic losses. Most enzymes engaged in the metabolism of abscisic acid (ABA) have been identified, and significant progress has been made in understanding the role of this phytohormone in the indu… Show more

“…Seed development in cereals is characterized by two peaks of ABA accumulation that occur during the mid- and late-phases of seed maturation. The accumulation of ABA in the latter peak (which is mainly synthesized in the zygotic tissues) plays a key role in the induction and maintenance of seed dormancy [ 95 ]. Endogenous production of ABA in barley is placed in the endosperm, and during seed maturation it is the embryo that is responsible for activation of genes responsible for ABA biosynthesis [ 96 ].…”

“…Abscisic acid is known to control dormancy in caryopses of several cereals. The inability of caryopses to complete germination is associated with the ABA level being too high (Fidler et al 2015 ; Rodríguez et al 2015 ). Consequently, the dormant A. fatua caryopses were not able to complete germination (Fig.…”

“…The practical aspect of the research includes the possibility of acceleration of seed germination when the sowing is late or germination uneven [30,46]. In this case the smoke-saturated water would be used instead of troublesome and dangerous smoke application [7,16].…”

“…It can be surmised that within such a seed lot, some senescing seeds or dormant seeds were affected [30]. One of the reasons for dormancy is the hardening of the testa, leading to impermeability to water and oxygen.…”
