Regulation and dysregulation of immunoglobulin E: a molecular and clinical perspective

Abstract: BackgroundAltered levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) represent a dysregulation of IgE synthesis and may be seen in a variety of immunological disorders. The object of this review is to summarize the historical and molecular aspects of IgE synthesis and the disorders associated with dysregulation of IgE production.MethodsArticles published in Medline/PubMed were searched with the keyword Immunoglobulin E and specific terms such as class switch recombination, deficiency and/or specific disease conditions (atopy, n… Show more

“…12 Eosinophilia was defined as > 500 eosinophil/mm 3 or > 7% and hyper-IgE > 500 IU/mL. 21,[26][27][28] When high eosinophilia and/or hyper-IgE was observed in the blood tests, but negative results were obtained in the first parasitological studies, further laboratory tests for helminths were performed ( Table 2).…”

“…16,17 Previous studies have considered relative and absolute eosinophilia and hyper-IgE as good indicators to facilitate the diagnosis of helminth infections in immigrants and travelers. [18][19][20][21] Some countries have launched screening protocols for immigrants including clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory screening. [22][23][24] This situation may be exacerbated by administrative problems such as the lack of legal documentation, difficulties to obtaining access to health care, and the attitude of not seeking medical treatment held by many immigrants.…”

“…However, the insurgence of the IgE system during the evolution of mammal immunity is likely to go beyond the protection against intestinal parasites, with allergic conditions as a sometime dramatic example of the dysregulation of the system. In the search for its comprehensive immune identity, an intriguing yet hypothetical scenario sees IgE as an antitumor surveillant (4,5). To date, controversial epidemiological studies and scattered clinical evidence do not allow a conclusion on whether this hypothesis holds true (6,7).…”

“…IgE antibody may play a protective role in some parasitic, bacterial and viral infections in humans, and possess anti-tumor properties in vitro [45]. Some authors have described IgE antibodies elevation in patients with dengue infections.…”
