Regression of rectal MALT lymphoma after antibiotic treatment in a patient negative for Helicobacter pylori

Abstract: A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital with bloody stool. Barium enema study and colonoscopy revealed multiple small nodules on the anterior wall of the lower rectum. Biopsy specimens showed proliferation of atypical lymphoid cells forming the nodules. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma was diagnosed on the basis of histologic and immunohistochemical examinations. No metastasis was detected in lymph nodes or distant organs, indicative of clinical stage I disease. Although the test results were … Show more

“…Several case reports have documented the efficacy of H. pylori eradication therapy for rectal MALT lymphoma . However, improvements with eradication are also observed in H. pylori ‐negative cases . Moreover, non‐ H. pylori bacterial species susceptible to antibiotics may be involved in lesion formation.…”

“… 42 Of these, only 19% of 44 tested cases were H pylori -positive. Our literature review from 1999 to 2017 identified 8 cases of H pylori -negative rectal ENMZL, 43 - 48 and 3 cases of H pylori -negative colonic ENMZL. 49 Single case reports of H pylori -negative ENMZL in the ileum and esophagus have also been documented.…”

“…J Can Sci Res 3: 02. doi:10.4172/2576-1447.1000S2-002 [11], some cases have reported the possibility that antibiotic therapy for H. pylori is as effective for rectum MALT lymphoma as it is for gastric MALT lymphoma. Interestingly, some of these cases have reported that rectum MALT lymphoma has responded to antibiotic therapy regardless of whether patients are infected with H. pylori or not [12][13][14][15][16]. This fact indicates an unspecified pathogen other than H. pylori but its detail is not well proved.…”
