Plant Dis. 97:1051-1056.Expressing temperature-sensitive resistance (TSR) protects wheat against yield losses from infection with Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV). In examining how 2,429 wheat accessions from the National Small Grains Collection responded to inoculation with the Sid81 isolate of WSMV, 20 candidate TSR sources were discovered. To differentiate their relative effectiveness, accession responses over 21 days to inoculation with GH95, Sid81, and PV57 virus isolates in regimes of 18 and 20°C were observed. At 18°C, all 20 candidate TSR sources were uniformly or nearly uniformly asymptomatic 21 days after inoculation with the PV57 isolate, resistance indistinguishable from resistant checks KS96HW10-3 and RonL. By contrast, the Sid81 isolate induced symptoms in low but significant proportions of plants of two candidates, and the GH95 isolate in high proportions for four candidates and low but significant proportions for two others. In the more stringent 20°C regime, the uniform or near-uniform induction of symptoms in response to inoculation with GH95 failed to differentiate among the 20 candidate TSR sources and two resistant checks, while PV57 and Sid81 identified several candidates that performed similarly to KS96HW10-3 and significantly better than RonL. By identifying new sources of resistance, this study contributes to the control of WSMV.

Wheat streak mosaic (WSM), caused by Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), is a devastating disease in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in the Great Plains of North America. Use of resistance is an effective and environmentally sound method to control the disease. In this study, six wheat genotypes were compared for their responses to WSMV infection under growth chamber conditions. The three resistant genotypes, KS96HW10‐3 (Wsm1), Mace (Wsm1), and CO960293‐2, had disease scores significantly lower than the remaining three genotypes without major resistance. Disease in TAM 111 and TAM 112 was consistently less severe than Karl 92. A population consisting of 188 F2:3 families derived from the cross CO960293‐2 × TAM 111 was used for determining inheritance of the WSMV resistance and for molecular mapping of the resistance in CO960293‐2. Data on segregation of resistance indicated that the resistance in CO960293‐2 is conditioned by a single dominant gene, which was named Wsm2 Transgressive segregation toward susceptibility occurred in the population suggesting a minor gene in the moderately susceptible parent TAM 111, which was not allelic to Wsm2. Wsm2 was mapped to the short arm of chromosome 3B with two flanking simple sequence repeat markers. The single dominant gene inheritance for WSMV resistance in CO960293‐2 has been consistent with the observations that the resistance can be readily transferred to adapted cultivars.

The Russian wheat aphid, Diruaphis noxia (Kudjumov) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is globally one of the most devastating pests of wheat, Tritium aestivum L., and barley, Hordeum vulgare L. Host plant resistance is the foundation of cereal insect pest management programs, and several D. noxia resistance (Dn) genes from wheat have been introduced in commercial cultivars of wheat to manage Russian wheat aphid (RWA). Emergence of D. noxia biotype 2 (RWA2) in Colorado has made all known Dn genes, except the Dn7 gene from rye, Secale cereale L., vulnerable and has warranted exploration for sources of resistance to RWA1 and RWA2. Here, we report antibiosis resistance to RWA1 and RWA2 identified in the wheat breeding line KS94H871. Additional experiments indicated that tolerance and antixenosis are not operating in KS94H871. Segregation studies involving F2-derived F3 families indicated that KS94H871 resistance to RWA1 is controlled by one dominant gene and one recessive gene, whereas resistance to RWA2 is controlled by only one dominant gene. This new genetic resource may serve as a good source of resistance in future breeding programs with proper understanding of the genetics of resistance.
