“…The major source of the inbred lines, TZMSR, was a midaltitude adapted population formed by crossing the best varieties and hybrids from eastern, southern and central Africa to a maize streak virus-resistant germplasm (IITA 1984). “…The Striga resistant or tolerant inbred lines adapted to the midaltitudes (TZSTRI118 TZSTRI126) were identified from trials involving a large number of elite inbred lines tested at Abuja and Mokwa under Striga infestation. These lines were derived mainly from single crosses between midaltitude adapted inbred lines from IITA (Everett et al, 1994a, 1994b). The selected inbred line were evaluated as lines per se at Abuja and Mokwa for 3 yr. As shown in Table 3, the susceptible lowland inbred line (5057) sustained 84% yield loss under Striga infestation, suffered high Striga damage, and supported a large number of Striga plants.…”
