Registered Nurses’ Self-Assessed Knowledge of Evidence-Based Practice and Research

Abstract: By 2020, most clinical decisions should be supported by best evidence. Therefore, nurses need institutional support and education about evidence-based practice (EBP) and research. The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ self-assessed knowledge of EBP and research. Findings revealed nurses’ knowledge of EBP and research ranged from no knowledge to high knowledge with opportunities for education. Providing for the use of best evidence is a dynamic process involving clinicians, educators, and administrators. Show more

“…Some of the barriers include lack of EBP knowledge and skills; lack of education about data collection and research methods; cultures steeped in tradition; misperceptions or negative attitudes about the application of research and evidence‐based care; lack of time and resources to search for and critically appraise evidence; as well as organizational constraints, such as lack of administrative support or incentives to search for and apply evidence, and lack of EBP mentors or nurse managers’ support (Duncombe, 2018; Melnyk & Fineout‐Overholt, 2019; Melnyk et al, 2012; Shayan et al, 2019). Although nurses highly value EBP to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes, a major barrier to implementing and maintaining a culture of EBP is the lack of EBP competence (Albarqouni et al, 2018; Gradone & Staffileno, 2019; Nickles et al, 2019; Saunders et al, 2019; Yoder et al, 2014). For example, in a recent national study, Melnyk et al (2018) surveyed 2,344 nurses employed by 19 hospitals and healthcare systems across the United States to describe their self‐reported EBP competencies.…”
