ABSTRACT:A methodology has been used by means of which modellers and planners can quantify the certainty in predicting the location of deforestation. Geographic information system and logistic regression analyses were employed to predict the spatial distribution of deforestation and detects factors influencing forest degradation of Hyrcanian forests of western Gilan, Iran. The logistic regression model proposed that deforestation is a function of slope, distance to roads and residential areas. The coefficients for the explanatory variables indicated that the probability of deforestation is negatively related to slope, distance from roads and residential areas. Although the distance factor was found to be a contributor to deforestation, its effect is lower than that of slope. The correlates of deforestation may change over time, and so the spatial model should be periodically updated to reflect these changes. Like in any model, the quality may be improved by introducing the new variables that may contribute to explaining the spatial distribution of deforestation.

RESUMENSe hace revisión de literatura de los ámbitos de aplicación de la medicina veterinaria y la zootecnia con el objetivo de entender su significado y acción en la sociedad actual y futura, con énfasis en la realidad colombiana. Se muestra cómo estas ciencias tienen competencias y responsabilidades importantes en diversos sectores como el ambiental, social, una salud y no únicamente en el agropecuario. La crisis ambiental y el gran dinamismo que caracteriza el mundo contemporáneo, han creado nuevas necesidades que representan una gran oportunidad para las ciencias veterinarias y zootécnicas, si éstas logran responder a los nuevos retos y aprovechar su rol natural en los sectores que ahora les competen. Su institucionalidad y hegemonía dependerá de su capacidad de adaptación, flexibilidad y liderazgo. Por lo tanto, es pertinente que las ciencias veterinarias y zootécnicas colombianas realicen una prospección colectiva disciplinaria para entender los nuevos retos y les permita prepararse para el futuro.Palabras clave: Ciencias agrícolas, competencia profesional, medicina veterinaria, servicios veterinarios, zootecnia (Fuente:CAB). ABSTRACTA review of the Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics is done aiming to understand their significance and performance in the current and future society, with main focus in the Colombian reality. The review shows the competences and responsibilities that these sciences have in diverse sectors such as the environmental, social and health, area, and not just in agriculture. The environmental crisis and the dynamics of the modern world have created new needs that represent a great opportunity for the Veterinary sciences and Zootechnics, if they can respond to new challenges and make use of their natural role in the sectors that now are of their competence. Their institutionally and hegemony will depend on their adaptation, flexibility and leadership capacity. Therefore, this is pertinent for the Zootechnics and Veterinary sciences to perform a collective disciplinary prospection to understand new challenges and prepare for the future.

RESUMENSe midieron los flujos de materia orgánica aportados por la hojarasca al manantial de Cañaverales (La Guajira, Colombia), durante un período de seis meses (seco y lluvioso). La caída mensual fue de 0,17 t·ha -1 ·mes -1 , que extrapolada a un año representó 2,08 t·ha -1 ·año -1 , valor intermedio a los registrados en otros bosques secos tropicales. Se evidenció una correlación significativa entre la caída de hojarasca y la precipitación. Los aportes orgánicos fueron dominados por la fracción foliar (66,61 %), seguidos del material reproductivo (15,92 %), el material leñoso (11,12 %) y misceláneo (6,36 %). La mayor caída de hojarasca foliar se regis tró para Prosopis juliflora (1,31 t·ha -1 ·año -1 ) y la menor caída la presentó Brosimum alicastrum (0,46 t·ha -1 ·año -1 ). Las especies P. juliflora y Anacardium excelsum presentaron los mayores aportes de hojarasca foliar, lo que sugiere que podrían ser especies potenciales para su inclusión en actividades de restauración de zonas con corrientes de agua. P. juliflora fue la especie que presentó mayores tasas de descomposición de hojarasca (0,242 año -1 ), mientras que la Sterculia apetala fue la más persistente (0,079 año -1 ). Los resultados indican que la caída de hojarasca está condicionada por la composición del bosque y las variaciones climáticas.Palabras claves: Brosimum alicastrum, materia orgánica, Prosopis juliflora, Sterculia apetala. ABSTRACTWe analyzed the contribution of particulate organic matter to the spring Cañaverales (La Guajira, Colombia) over a period of six months (dry and rainy). The monthly litterfall was 0.17 t·ha -1 ·month -1 , which represented 2.08 t·ha -1 ·year -1 when extrapolated to one year. This is an intermediate value with respect to others reported from tropical dry forests. The correlation between litter production and precipitation was statistically significant. Litterfall was dominated by the leaf fraction (66.61 %), followed by the reproductive material (15.92 %), the woody (11.12 %) and miscellaneous materials (6.36 %). The highest production of leaf litter was registered for Prosopis juliflora (1.31 t·ha -1 ·year -1 ) and the lowest for Brosimum alicastrum (0.46 t·ha -1 ·year -1 ). P. juliflora and Anacardium excelsum, presented the major contributions of foliar leaf litter, what suggests they could be potential species for inclusion in restoration activities in riparian areas. P. juliflora was the species that presented the highest rates of litter decomposition (0.242 year -1 ), while the Sterculia apetala was the most persistent (0.079 year -1 ). The results indicate that litterfall and litter decomposition rates depend on forest composition and climatic variations.
