Regional heterogeneity for the intracranial self-administration of ethanol within the ventral tegmental area of female Wistar rats

Abstract: The findings suggest that EtOH is reinforcing within the posterior VTA of Wistar rats, and the VTA is a functionally heterogeneous structure with regard to EtOH reinforcement.

“…Data for these rats were not included in the statistical analyses. Cannula placements surrounding the VTA did not support ETOH self-administration (average number of active and inactive lever responses during acquisition were 872 and 772, respectively), which is in agreement with findings previously reported (Rodd et al, 2004b;Rodd-Henricks et al, 2000).…”

“…Moreover, the self-infusion of ACD by P rats exhibits subregional heterogeneity similar to that observed for EtOH between the anterior and posterior VTA (Figure 2). In addition, ACD appears to be a 1000-fold more potent reinforcer than EtOH in the posterior VTA, a finding that is in agreement with previous results when data for Wistar and P rats were compared (Rodd-Henricks et al, 2000, 2002b. In vitro studies indicated that 45-225 mg% EtOH could generate up to 4 nmol/mg tissue wet wt/h of ACD (approximately 4 mM ACD).…”
