Regional estimation and validation of remotely sensed evapotranspiration in China

Abstract: Accurate estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) are important to skillful predictions of runoff, soil moisture and crop productivity. In this study, ET was simulated over three years in China by integrating remotely-sensed data with the simulation model SEBS-China. SEBS-China was developed from the Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) model that is used to estimate atmospheric turbulent heat fluxes and evaporative fraction through satellite-derived radiation fluxes and land surface temperatures coupled with near… Show more

“…Conversely, in Figure 15, R n shows a similar magnitude but a negative correlation coefficient (R ≥ −0.5, p < 0.05) with ET and its components' variability except for E w (Figure 15e) in arid and semi-arid conditions. These results are consistent with eco-climatic conditions where the hydrologic cycle is dominated by the water supply [59,60].…”

“…Some studies presented a modification of the SEBS inner structure in terms of: (i) momentum roughness length and zero plane displacement; (ii) an empirical relationship between land surface temperature and air temperature; and (iii) designing a new input interface of meteorological field at reference, with the objective of representing land surface and climatic changes of a specific region. These studies adapted SEBS to be applicable in different countries like Taiwan (SEBS-Taiwan, [102]), China (SEBS-China, [103]) or Iran (SEBS-Iran, [104]). SEBS was also modified at local scale (SEBS-Urban, [105]) after including the anthropogenic heat flux in the SEB equation to estimate the ET of Beijing city.…”

“…To estimate regional ET, SEBS requires accurate gridded meteorological data as input [23]. Earlier studies used gridded meteorological data interpolated from site measurements using mathematical interpolation [24][25][26][27] to provide input for the SEBS model. However, using mathematical interpolation from station measurements cannot effectively consider the heterogeneity of the underlying surface [28].…”
