Regional Economic Impacts of Fusarium Head Blight in Wheat and Barley

Abstract: Fusarium Head Blight is a fungus affecting wheat and barley in the upper Midwest region of the United States. The purpose of this study is to estimate the direct and secondary regional economic impacts of Fusarium Head Blight infestations from 1998 to 2000. Cumulative direct production and price impacts from Fusarium Head Blight in hard red spring, soft red winter, durum wheat, and barley are estimated at $871 million over the period, with secondary economic losses of $1.8 billion. The total impacts of $2.7 bi… Show more

“…For example, FHB caused an estimated loss of approx. US$2 billion in the Northern Great Plains and Central US region in 1993-2001 (Nganje et al, 2004). FHB is predominantly caused by Fusarium graminearum (O'Donnell et al, 2004), but other Fusarium species including F. culmorum (Kollers et al, 2013) and F. pseudograminearum (Chakraborty et al, 2010) can also cause the disease.…”

“…are among the most important toxigenic fungi (1)(2)(3)(4), causing the cereal disease Fusarium head blight (FHB). Epidemics caused by FHB resulted in economic losses of 2.7 billion U.S. dollars in U.S. wheat and barley production between 1998 and 2000 (5). The most prevalent mycotoxins produced by Fusarium spp.…”

“…Fusarium head blight (FHB) epidemics and the chronic crown rot (FCR) problem can cause up to AUD$ 100 million annual losses in Australia Brennan, 2010, 2009) and FHB reportedly causes up to US$ 2.7 billion losses in the United States of America (Nganje et al, 2002). In addition to yield reductions, the contamination of the infected plants, including the grains, with mycotoxins produced by the fungus is a major issue particularly with FHB (Desjardins et al, 2003).…”
