ABSTRACT Seed starch content (SSC) is a decisive factor influencing soy food quality. Variation in SSC affects the composition of major components, oil, and protein in soybean seeds. Therefore, understanding G × E interaction of SSC is important to produce soybeans with stable SSC. In the present study, G × E interactions of 17 soybean genotypes having different SSC (0.24-1.48%) and correlation of SSC with crude protein (CP) and crude fat (CF) were investigated. The genotypes were evaluated for SSC and other traits at two planting dates across three locations over two years (2015 and 2016). The genotype × year, genotype × location, and genotype × year × location interactions were found to be significant (P ≤ 0.001) for SSC, CP, and CF. The average SSC content was found to be higher in 2015 than in 2016. Late planted soybeans contained higher SSC than the early planting soybeans. The SSC was negatively affected by the average daily mean and minimum temperatures and cloudiness during the pod-filling stage. Based on the mean rank, IT189276 (1.39%) was observed to be the most stable genotype among the high starch containing soybeans. Significant (P ≤ 0.0001) negative correlations were found between SSC and CP as well as CP and CF contents. However, a significant (P ≤ 0.05) positive correlation was observed between SSC and CF content. Results of this study showed that SSC affects the seed protein and oil contents and is significantly influenced by the growing environments.

Trends in Soybean Trait Improvement over Generations of Selective Breeding

Improvement of agronomic and seed quality traits in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] occurs in breeding programs as a result of crossing elite soybean genotypes and selection of superior offspring in each cycle. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in traits over 100 yr of selection in Ontario, Canada, in two soybean breeding programs at the University of Guelph: Guelph Campus (Maturity Group [MG] 0 and I) and Ridgetown Campus (MG II) programs. Fifty‐six Guelph cultivars (released between 1983 and 2016), 46 Ridgetown cultivars (released between 1987 and 2015), and 37 Guelph‐pedigree related historical cultivars (from 1913 to 1985) were grown in field trials over 3 yr (Guelph Campus) and 2 yr (Ridgetown Campus) at two locations per breeding program to measure 13 traits. Yield increased in the Guelph Campus cultivars by 17.1 kg ha−1 yr−1 and by 15.7 kg ha−1 yr−1 in the Ridgetown Campus cultivars, while yield per day of maturity per year of release significantly increased in elite cultivars. Protein in the Ridgetown Campus cultivars increased at 0.76 g kg−1 yr−1, whereas the Guelph Campus cultivars showed no trend. In Ridgetown Campus cultivars 100‐seed weight significantly increased at 0.1 g yr−1. Within the historical cultivars, 100‐seed weight was significantly correlated with both protein (r = 0.50) and oil (r = −0.42). Genotype × trait biplot analyses revealed differential patterns of trait relationships between the elite and historical cultivars. Oil and yield were associated within the Guelph Campus cultivars. The association of 100‐seed weight and protein was only found in the historical cultivars. Yield has increased in both breeding programs while seed traits have been altered over time.

Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) root rot is an important disease of soybean under continuous cropping, and root rot is widely distributed throughout the world. This disease is extremely harmful, and it is difficult to prevent and control. The study aimed to elucidate the composition of root rot pathogenic fungal communities in the continuous cropping of soybean. In this study, we employed PCR-DGGE technology to analyze the communities of root rot pathogenic fungi in soybean rhizosphere soil subjected to continuous cropping during a season with a high incidence of root rot in Heilongjiang province, China, the main soybean producing area in China. The results of 13 DGGE bands were analyzed by phylogenetic revealed that the predominant root rot pathogenic fungi in rhizosphere soil in the test area were Pythium ultimum and Fusarium species. The results of cluster analysis showed that the duration of continuous cropping, the soybean variety and the plant growth stage all had significant effects on the diversity of root rot pathogenic fungi in rhizosphere soil.
