This research investigates the interaction effect between corruption and foreign direct investment (FDI) on environmental pollution by applying the spatial econometric model to the panel data of China’s 29 provinces from 1994 to 2015 and analyzes the differences between China’s eastern, central and western regions. Results show that (a) FDI inflow deteriorates the environmental quality, validating the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH); (b) by weakening the environmental standards, corruption enables the inflow of low-quality FDI, weakens the spillover effect of FDI and indirectly causes further environmental pollution; (c) the interaction effect between corruption and FDI on environmental pollution is less significant in the eastern region than in the central and western regions.

This paper focuses on the carbon emission reduction effect of anti-corruption mediated by renewable-led energy transition based on the panel data of 98 countries from 1996 to 2015. Since the mediation model is estimated by estimating a series of multiple regression equations, the total, direct and indirect effects can be separated out to clarify the conduction path between corruption control, renewable energy and carbon emissions. Owing to confirmation of the Sobel-Goodman mediation tests, renewable energy acts as a significant mediator through which corruption control contributes to emission reduction, regardless of the indicator is total carbon emissions, carbon emissions per capita or carbon emission intensity. For policymakers and regulators, there needs to be more emphasis on eliminating corruption in the increased penetration of renewable energy and not being seduced by traditional lobbyists. Particularly for developing countries, the effective way to reduce emissions is to remove institutional barriers in priority areas including the energy and resources sectors to cleaner-oriented energy transition.

The This article presents a case study of Pakistan with a special focus on the institutional reforms of the newly elected government brought within a short period of time. The study identifies and evaluates only the major reforms in several ministries and departments. The data of this case study is evaluated with the content analysis approach. Findings reveal that a record number of reforms have been introduced in FBR, NAB and Ministry of Interior. Local governments and major government institutions were given additional authority and autonomy which resulted in the decrease of corruption, terrorism and politicization. Findings also confirm considerable changes in e-governance with the launch of technological tools and techniques that eventually facilitated the public and modernized governance. Apart from that, the PM Imran Khan conveyed a positive image of the country to the international community which increased tourism to a greater extent. The findings of this study are significant and pertinent to complementary future scholarship and practice.
