The study aims to determine the spatial and temporal variation of a longevous region and explore the correlation between longevity and socioeconomic development. Population data at the township level were obtained from the last four population censuses (1982–2010). Five main lifespan indicators and the Human Development Index (HDI) were calculated. Getis-Ord G*, Gravity modeling, and Pearson’s r between lifespan indicators and HDI were applied. In this study, a stable longevous gathering area was discovered in Hechi during different periods. Under the influence of social and economic development, more longevous areas appeared. However, the effects of genetic and natural environmental factors on longevity were always dominant in this remote and mountainous city. Furthermore, longevity indicators lacked any significant correlation with life expectancy. No significant positive correlation was detected between lifespan indicators and HDI. Thus, we conclude that lifespan indicators can determine the spatial distribution and variation pattern of longevity from multiple dimensions. The geographical scope of longevity in Hechi City is gradually expanding, and significant spatial clustering was detected in southwestern, southern, and eastern parts of Hechi. This study also found that social economic development is likely to have a certain impact on new longevous areas, but their role on extreme longevity is not significant.

Objectives: The oldest old population has become the fastest growing segment with excess need of care and social support, it is crucial to improve the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of these populations. This study seeks to evaluate the health status and to investigate modifiable factors associated with health-related quality of life for oldest old adults in China. Design: A cross-sectional population-based study. Setting: Hainan Province in the south of China. Participants: 1,278 adults aged 80 years or older. Methods: HRQoL was assessed by three-level EuroQol-5D scale (EQ-5D-3L) and a visual analogue scale (VAS). Demographic and healthrelated variables were analysed by estimating mean values and standard deviations for continuous variables, percentages and standard deviations for categorical variables. Tobit regressions, ordinary least Squared (OLS) regressions and ordered probit regressions were adopted to determine the associated factors for overall HRQoL and for each health dimension. Results: Anxiety/depression was the least reported problem while mobility was the most frequently reported with problem. Female respondents had lower EQ-5D score (0.76 vs. 0.86) and VAS score (66.55 vs. 69.84) than male respondents. Better health-related quality of life was significantly associated with higher BMI, no drinking habit, more leisure activities, living with family members, good sleeping quality, closer social and family connections, fewer numbers of drugs consumed per day, without having hearing or visual impairment, and fewer chronic conditions, after controlling for potential confounders. Conclusion: Findings from this study suggested that quality of life was not only associated with age-related diseases, but also correlated with a range of health-related lifestyles, and factors indicating social and family support.

Serum Albumin and Activities of Daily Living in Chinese Centenarians: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract Background Objective deterioration in activities of daily living (ADLs) exists among older people, and particularly worsens with age. Considering the criterion standard of positive aging and longevity, little information focusing on centenarians is available. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between serum albumin and ADLs among centenarians in long-lived areas. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study investigated a complete sample of Chinese persons aged ≥100 years in Hainan, the longest-lived area of China (n=1002). We assessed serum albumin levels and basic and instrumental activities of daily living (BADLs and IADLs). Results Of 1002 participants included in the analysis, 287 (28.64%) had BADL disabilities and 648 (64.67%) had IADL disabilities. The median serum albumin level was 38.5 g/L (interquartile range, 36.2–41.3). The multivariable analyses controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle, morbidities, and other influential factors showed that albumin level was associated with the total score of BADL ( standard β=0.335, P<0.001) and IADL ( standard β=0.206, P<0.001). With the increasing of albumin level, the risk of ADLs disability decreased (BADL: odds ratios [OR] = 0.835, 95% Confidence interval [CI]: 0.797-0.876; IADL: OR=0.863, 95%CI: 0.824-0.905). In the stratified analyses, similar results were found in both sex, but were more prominent in women. Conclusions Higher levels of serum albumin was a protective factor for the decline of ADLs in centenarians. This association can be observed in both genders and is more pronounced in women.
