Region-level obesity projections and an examination of its correlates in Quebec

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: Regional public health policy-makers frequently adopt obesity programs and objectives that have been established at global, provincial/state or national levels. However, the presence of substantial inter-regional disparities could render this practice inefficient. Studies that collectively assess obesity prevalence, temporal trends and their heterogeneity at the region level are rare, though they could be used to support better regional surveillance and planning. To address this gap, our study proj… Show more

“…By design, participants in this cohort had at least one parent with obesity, a strong risk factor for childhood obesity 38 . In Quebec, it is expected that the prevalence of adults with obesity will increase to 23% by 2023 39 . As such, a growing proportion of children will grow up in households including a parent with obesity.…”

“…38 In Quebec, it is expected that the prevalence of adults with obesity will increase to 23% by 2023. 39 As such, a growing proportion of children will grow up in households including a parent with obesity. Examining associations between adherence to the 24-hour movement guidelines and adiposity in this unique cohort of children at high risk of obesity highlights a need for early interventions specifically among these high-risk youth.…”

“…In addition to SES indicators and PA, we have collected for other variables associated with obesity: region ( 30 ), age, gender, marital status, smoking, alcohol consumption, adequate fruit and vegetable intake, and high-fat diet ( 18 , 25 ). All variables were collected by trained interviewers through face-to-face interviews.…”

“…Factors beyond genetics play a central role in the likelihood of an individual becoming obese. Such factors include those primarily related to lifestyle (e.g., diet and physical activity) and social networks (e.g., media and peer pressure) [6][7][8][9], as well as other geographic considerations (e.g., urban areas vs. rural areas and accessibility) and the role of the built environment [10][11][12][13][14]. An enormous body of literature exists that examines the factors associated with obesity and potential approaches to mitigate the issue (e.g., [15,16]).…”
