“…Knowing that the G.c . peralta in Waza National Park, Cameroon, do indeed show a preference for this species (Ngog Nej, 1984), and are moderate consumers in Niger, we can eliminate the possibility that this tree has a strong chemical deterrent, as may be the case with G. senegalensis . Thus, we must assume that giraffes can differentiate between the seemingly slight differences in composition between this species and C. glutinosum.…”

“…Ngog Nej (1984) and Mohamed (1995) provide the only prior studies on giraffe diet in west Africa. Both list B. aegyptica among the most preferred tree species by giraffes.…”

“…Prior to this research most studies of giraffe population dynamics have focused on decreasing (Leuthold, 1978) or stable populations (Foster & Dagg, 1972; Ngog Nje, 1983) and the maximum annual growth rate of a giraffe population was reported to be 6%, in the Serengeti National Park (Pellew, 1983). The aims of our study were to (1) analyse the results of the various West African giraffe censuses from 1996 to 1999 (count data from photo-identification) and from 2005 to 2008 (both count and demographic data), (2) assess the structure of this population, and (3) estimate the demographic parameters of this recovering population.…”

“…Waza National Park (NP), situated in Sahelo‐Sudanian Cameroon, is the west‐central African stronghold of the giraffe [ Giraffa camelopardalis (L.)] (Ngog Nje, 1983) and the elephant [ Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach)] (Tchamba & Elkan, 1995). Waza NP also harbours significant populations of kob [ Kobus kob (Erxleben)], korrigum [ Damaliscus lunatus korrigum (Burchell)], roan [ Hippotragus equinus (Desmarest)] and red‐fronted gazelle [ Gazelle rufifrons (Gray)], and minor populations of bohor reedbuck [ Redunca redunca (Pallas)], waterbuck [ Kobus elypsiprymmus (Ogilby)] and grey duiker [ Sylvicapra grimmia (L.)] (Tchamba & Elkan, 1995; East, 1999).…”
