Regeneration of rabbit olfactory epithelium

Abstract: Epithelial regeneration was determined with light and electron microscopy after preferential chemical destruction of olfactory epithelium in rabbits. Regeneration of either olfactory epithelium, ciliated columnar epithelium or a mixture of the two occurred. Previously observed interspecies variation in olfactory regenerative capability is therefore also an intraspecies variable. The ducts or glands of Bowman appeared to furnish the cells for either type of epithelial regeneration. Well differentiated olfactory… Show more

“…Nonetheless, the degree of anatomic recovery in the olfactory epithelium overall after MeBr exposure is striking (Hurtt et al, 1988;Hastings et al, 1991;Schwob et al, 1995). Other models of epithelial damage, such as ZnSO 4 or nonionic detergent irrigation, give results that are similar in broad outline and in many of the details to the observations obtained by using MeBr (Mulvaney and Heist, 1971;Matulionis, 1975Matulionis, , 1976Harding et al, 1978;Nadi et al, 1981;Kream and Margolis, 1984;Burd, 1993).…”

“…It has been reported that basal cells in the olfactory epithelium are progenitors leading to the regeneration of new neuroepithelium (8,9,11,29), while others have suggested that the epithelial cells of Bowman's glands are progenitors for restoration of the olfactory epithelium (30,40). However, in this study, the progenitor cells involved in the restoration of the olfactory epithelium appeared to be the olfactory stem cells, which originate from basal cells rather than the epithelial cells of Bowman's glands.…”

“…Retroviral lineage analyses have confirmed that all neuronal progenitors of the ORN lineage (including, presumably, stem cells) reside in basal OE (Caggiano et al, 1994). Such studies have also contributed to the realization, derived initially from developmental and immunohistochemical experiments, that neither horizontal basal cells nor sustentacular cells are within the ORN lineage (Klein and Graziadei, 1983;Matulionis, 1976;Mulvaney and Heist, 1971).…”
