Parthenogenesis, the development of female gametes without fertilization, is relatively common in brown algae, although limited quantitative information on the phenomenon is available. Its occurrence is reported for the first time in Lessonia nigrescens Bory, a member of the Laminariales and a key ecological component of the benthic algal communities along the Chilean coast. Isolated female gametophytes developed into parthenosporophytes throughout the year, with a maximum in spring to early summer. Isolated male gametophytes, on the other hand, never developed fronds. Parthenosporophytes obtained in the laboratory developed normally when cultivated under greenhouse conditions, and the resulting individuals were indistinguishable in size, shape, texture, and color from heterozygous sporophytes. Quantification of DNA of various tissues demonstrated that early during their development, parthenosporophytes duplicated their DNA content, displaying levels similar to heterozygous sporophytes and almost twice the level found in gametophytes. One out of 45 individuals from a field population yielded only female gametophytes, strongly suggesting that parthenogenesis does occur in wild stands of L. nigrescens.

The role played by plant growth regulators in algae is poorly known . In order to increase the knowledge about the function of auxins and cytokinins in seaweeds, explants such as apical and intercalary segments and calluslike structures (CLS) of Grateloupia dichotoma were cultured in semi-solid or liquid artificial media ASP 12-NTA . Two auxins, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and one cytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), at concentrations of 0 .5 and 5 .0 mg 1-1 were tested . Moreover, IAA and BA were tested together at concentrations of 1 :5 and 5 :1 mg 1 -' . All treatments promoted the growth of CLS in intercalary segments ; CLS from apical segments were significantly higher in treatments with 2,4-D or IAA :BA (1 :5 mg 1 -1 ) . The morphogenetic responses for auxins and BA were opposite, auxins inhibited while BA promoted the formation of lateral branches ; however, auxins promoted the elongation of such branches . The process of plant regeneration observed on CLS was stimulated significantly by treatment with high concentration of BA or IAA :BA (1 :5 mg 1 -1 ) in semi-solid and liquid media. The growth of upright axes was stimulated significantly by treatment with 2,4-D in semi-solid medium, and IAA :BA (1 :5 mg 1 -1 ) in liquid medium . These results show the importance that plant growth regulators could have in the control of growth, morphogenetic processes and micropropagation in red algae .

Seaweed aquaculture technologies have developed dramatically over the past 70 years mostly in Asia and more recently in Americas and Europe. However, there are still many challenges to overcome with respect to the science and to social acceptability. The challenges include the development of strains with thermo-tolerance, disease resistance, fast growth, high concentration of desired molecules, the reduction of fouling organisms and the development of more robust and cost efficient farm systems that can withstand storm events in offshore environments. It is also important to note that seaweed aquaculture provides ecosystem services, which improve conditions of the coastal waters for the benefit of other living organisms and the environment. The ecosystem services role of seaweed aquaculture and its economic value will also be quantitatively estimated in this review.
