Regeneration and assessment of genetic fidelity of the endangered tree Moringa peregrina (Forsk.) Fiori using Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR)

Abstract: Moringa peregrina is an endangered species of Moringaceae. M. peregrina is a multipurpose tree with a wide variety of potential uses including its medicinal activity. In our study, a rapid and efficient micropropagation protocol for M. peregrina has been established. In vitro germinated seedlings were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different levels of either 6-benzyladenine (BA) or kinetin (Kin). The maximum shoot proliferation of 6.5 shoots per explant with 100 % shoot prolifera… Show more

“…The formation of callus and adventitious shoots is influenced by the interactions between endogenous and exogenous plant growth regulators (Guo et al 2016). Multiple studies have shown that 6-BA influences adventitious shoot differentiation more than do other cytokinins (Al Khateeb et al 2013;Lee and Pijut 2017;Zhang et al 2017), but only in the condition of rational configuration of cytokinin and auxin, there is a high frequency induction in explants.…”

“…The fruits are elongate capsules, with a beak, glabrous and slightly narrowed between the seeds. The seeds are globose to ovoid or trigonous [10,19,20]. Plantations of M. peregrina have been assessed as quite promising, with growth reasonably rapid and cultivation easy [15].…”

“…This finding was also corroborated by Bonyanpour and Khosh-Khui (2013) who reported that contrary results obtained in shoot induction response was caused by differences in cultivar and explant type. Different results were also obtained from other plant species as well (Khateeb, Bahar, Lahham, Schroeder, & Hussein, 2012;Baskaran, Moyo, & Van Staden, 2013). Idowu, Ibitoye and Ademoyegun (2009) reported that in general explants obtained from different organs vary in their regeneration capabilities and juvenile tissues have higher micropropagation potential than mature tissues.…”
