Regenerating performance of glass fibre recycled from wind turbine blade

Abstract: The value of recycled glass fibres is reduced significantly due to loss in strength and surface functionality during recycling. This work investigates the potential of a variety of treatments to regenerate the strength and surface functionality of glass fibres recycled from retired wind turbine blades using an in-house developed fluidised bed process. It was found that soaking in hot NaOH solution could provide approximately a 130% increase in the tensile strength of recycled glass fibre; concluding that chang… Show more

“…Finally, the use of glass fibre for the turbine blades constitutes about 9% of the turbine's global warming impacts. The recyclability of wind turbine blades, is an issue, which is being investigated [89] and which although not being identified as a hotspot here, could also contribute to reduce the overall impacts.…”

“…The use of alternative materials could be a solution to this, such as composites, which can provide similar strength properties for lower density and mass. However, recycling techniques are still under development for composite materials [40], and are well established for metals like steel and aluminium, so caution should be taken to ensure that the use of alternative materials to steel does not result in higher volumes of waste going to landfill.…”
