Refurbished or Remanufactured?—An Experimental Study on Consumer Choice Behavior

Abstract: Remanufacturing is one of the important means to achieve circular economy and improve the reuse of resources. But, compared with the reuse of old parts, most ordinary Chinese consumers are not familiar with remanufacturing. Because of this, the development of China’s remanufacturing industry is hindered. This paper introduces two kinds of consumer goods with different attributes, namely MP4 (the hedonic product) and cartridge (the functional product). The empirical study on the consumption behavior of Chinese … Show more

“…These risks are then weighted against the perceived benefits of refurbished products. A lower price and environmental benefits can incentivize consumers to buy refurbished products [ 10 , 15 , 17 , 28 30 ]. A wide distribution of the refurbished product on the market, a good seller’s reputation [ 17 ], extended warranties [ 15 ], and marketing strategies, such as probabilistic selling [ 31 ], can decrease the perceived risks associated with refurbished smartphones.…”

“…In this study, however, we hypothesized that the more consumers know about RAPs, the greater their awareness of RAPs' potential risks. This hypothesis is supported because typical consumers may not be familiar with remanufactured parts [67]. Therefore, their perceived risks or potential losses in purchasing RAPs are higher even when their perceived product knowledge is greater.…”

“…This study considers 906 Chinese laptop owners in order to explore the relationship with the assistance of structural equation modeling. Chen, Wang, et al (2020) conducted an experimental study on customer intentions towards the remanufactured products with the Chinese context. Pisitsankkhakarn and Vassanadumrongdee (2020) studied Thailand's consumer perspective on remanufactured automotive parts to enhance the CE, in which a quantitative survey was used to collect data and structural equation modeling was used to analyze it.…”
