Refractive Status and Amblyopia Risk Factors in Chinese Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: Amblyopia risk factors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are usually hard to detect in early childhood due to poor cooperation and has not been reported in the Chinese population. We screened 168 Chinese children with ASD, aged between 3 and 8 years, and 264 age-matched neurotypical children with Spot photoscreener and basic ophthalmologic examinations. Children with ASD were found to have normal refractive status but significantly higher incidence of strabismus (16.1%), compared with control ch… Show more

“…Red reflex images are acquired from subject, and non-cycloplegic refractive status, pupil size and gaze deviation are automatically recorded. Since both eyes are examined simultaneously, data acquisition is finished within 2 s [11,12]. All screened subjects from this study were successfully tested.…”

“…By simply asking the subject to look at the instrument, images of the red reflex can be acquired by the device, and then non-cycloplegic refractive status, pupil size and gaze deviation are automatically calculated. Minimal requirement of cooperation has made it a useful tool for children, even for children younger than 3 years of age6 or for those with developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders 7…”

“…It should be taken into consideration that a delayed operation may result in irreversible vision loss such as amblyopia. Fortunately, widely used vision screeners allow doctors to detect risk factors for amblyopia and intervene earlier, thereby reducing the incidence of amblyopia [36,37]. Patients with other types of congenital cataracts, that do not impair the vision seriously, such as anterior, coronal, or punctate cataract, should only be followed-up closely instead of immediate surgery.…”
