Refractive Indices and Molar Refractivities of Molten Rare-Earth Trichlorides and Their Mixtures with Alkali Chlorides

Abstract: New experimental data on the refractive indices and molar refractivities of molten cerium, neodymium, samarium, and gadolinium trichlorides and CeCl 3 −ACl, SmCl 3 −ACl, Gd 3 Cl−ACl (A = Na, 0.5Na−0.5K, K, and Cs) mixtures depending on the temperature and composition are reported. It is shown that the relative deviations of the molar refractivity of mixtures from their magnitudes inherent to the hypothetic ideal solutions increase as the radii of alkali metal cations rises. The difference in variation of the L… Show more

“…Anhydrous CaCl 2 and PbCl 2 , pure for analysis, were used to prepare reaction melts. Anhydrous lanthanide trichlorides (CeCl 3 , GdCl 3 , YbCl 3 ) were synthesized ordinarily through the chlorination of high purity CeO 2 , Gd 2 O 3 , Yb 2 O 3 powders with CCl 4 [ 33 ]. A small amount of each of these salts free from foreign impurities (moisture and hydrocarbons) was melted together with dehydrated lithium chloride for subsequent use as a reaction medium.…”
