Refractive index sensor based on high-order surface plasmon resonance in gold nanofilm coated photonic crystal fiber*

Abstract: We propose a novel kind of wide-range refractive index optical sensor based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) covered with nano-ring gold film. The refractive index sensing performance of the PCF sensor is analyzed and simulated by the finite element method (FEM). The refractive index liquid is infiltrated into the cladding air hole of the PCF. By comparing the sensing performance of two kinds of photonic crystal fiber structures, a wide range and high sensitivity structure is optimized. The surface plasmon reso… Show more

“…The resolution of sensor refers to the most minor change in the measurement parameters of the sample that the system can detect. The smaller the value of the minimum resolution, the better sensor's performance, and it is customary to use the following formula to express resolution: [26] R (RIU) = ∆λ min ∆n/∆λ res = ∆λ min /S λ ,…”

“…Owing to the flexibility of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structure design, many optical devices based on PCF have been developed, such as filters, [1][2][3] sensors, [4] and beam splitters. [5] The PCF-based sensors can measure a variety of environmental parameters including temperature, [6,7] refractive index, [8][9][10] and pressure. [11] Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is an advanced optical sensing technology.…”
