Refractive Index Profiles and Associated Synoptic Patterns

Abstract: A study is made of meteorological conditions associated with synoptic patterns passing over the Middle West leading to super-refractive index profiles. The signal strength for a 71.75 mc TV-link in Illinois is related to the refractive index profiles.

Anomalous propagation conditions have previously been identified in radio link RSLs and linked to pollution (David & Gao, 2016), sea-breeze (Rao et al, 1999) and synoptic weather patterns such as fronts (Arvola, 1957).
