Refractive Error at Birth and Its Relation to Gestational Age

Abstract: Term babies are known to be hypermetropic, and preterm babies with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are known to have myopia. This study provides data on the mean spherical equivalent, the degree of astigmatism, and incidence of anisometropia at different gestational ages. This is the largest study in world literature looking at refractive errors at birth against gestational age. It should help understand the norms of refractive errors in preterm babies.

“…[21] Myopia was the predominant refractive error and was present in 47.2% cases of which high myopia constituted about 27.8 % cases similar to other studies. [14] [22] Most preterm infants have with the rule astigmatism [23] similar to our study. Gunay demonstrated significantly higher rates of strabismus following laser treatment compared to IVB monotherapy.…”

“…The predominant WTR astigmatism in eyes with laser-treated ROP in the current report supports previous studies' findings that most preterm infants had WTR astigmatism. 19,30,31 Conversely, high astigmatism with a predominant against-the-rule has been reported in children with retinal residua and cryotherapy. 3,32 Whether treatment of ROP affects the development of astigmatism has been an issue to be studied.…”
