[1] Understanding regional carbon budgets is a leading issue in carbon cycling research, but issues of measurement difficulty, scale, boundaries, and logistics compromise estimates at areas larger than stands or research plots. We studied four 15 Â 15 km sample areas to examine land management and wildfire effects on carbon storage dynamics in the forested southeastern U.S. coastal plain region from 1975 to 2001. Carbon exchange and storage rates were estimated using satellite remote-sensing methods coupled with micrometeorological and biomass measurements. Carbon losses occurred by timber harvesting and fire, and carbon release continued for four years following clearing, suppressing landscape carbon gain proportional to the cleared area. Carbon accumulated at an average rate of 90,000 t C yr À1 in the landscape (total area 900 km 2 ) from 1975-2000, or $1 t C ha À1 yr À1 . Interannual variation was related mainly to the magnitude of annual plantation timber harvesting. Wildfires were rare and their effects on carbon balances consequently small, despite having large local impact. Previous studies in the area demonstrated that environmental fluctuations had little direct effect on the net landscape exchange of carbon, although indirect effects included higher probability of fire during droughts and shifts in harvesting to drier sites during wet periods. Although this study was a simple aggregation of carbon cycle components from fine spatial scale (Landsat images) to the landscape, the extrapolation incorporated important spatial and temporal environmental heterogeneities and led to the unexpected suggestion that the industrial forests of the southeast U.S. Coastal plain are a long-term carbon sink. Long periods of deforestation in the southern part of Tenerife Island have led to a point-of-no-return for recovery of vegetation, which requires human intervention. Good plantation techniques could help regenerate woody plants. A study was designed to provide information about the best plantation techniques for Pinus canariensis in the southern part of Tenerife, at the old pine forest location (precipitation <250mm and 12ºC mean annual temperature). Two study sites were selected (Fasnia and Arico); in each site two plots of 5 ha were established. In total, 4 plots were located and in each plot, 32 subplots of 16 x 16 m were marked out. In each subplot, 16 Pinus canariensis seedlings (1 year old) were planted and subjected to different combinations of fertilizers, chemical herbivore preventers, mechanical herbivore preventers (using stone castle, hay protectors and plastic protectors), hydrogels and mulch, giving a total of 32 subplot combinations. I monitored the rate of pine seedling survival over three years. The results indicated that fertilization had a negative effect on survivorship of the pine seedlings. Stone castle protectors and hydrogels were also negatively associated with seedling survival. By contrast, plastic protectors showed the highest efficiency in aiding seedling survivorship, and they also represent the quickest option in terms of how long it takes to employ the device. Given the soil and weather conditions of the study area, I would not recommend fertilization or hydrogels. Plastic protectors are recommended as herbivore protection, because they are easy to set up and offer better results.

LOS BOSQUES PROTECTORES DE PINUS HALEPENSIS EN LA PROVINCIA DE ALICANTE. CARACTERÍSTICAS DE UN PROCESO DE REVEGETACIÓN. por ANTONIO PASTOR-LÓPEZ* Y JOAQUÍN MARTÍN-MARTÍN* RESUMENLa repoblación forestal con Pinus halepensis en la provincia de Alicante se analiza como método casi exclusivo de regeneración de la cubierta vegetal durante el período 1945-1985, sobre la base de un estudio de 120 estaciones de muestreo y de la documentación disponible en la Unidad Forestal Provincial.Se describe el proceso en base a sus objetivos y metodología para conseguirlos. Se abordan los aspectos que definen la realidad de la repoblación, respondiendo a las preguntas ¿Cómo? ¿Cuándo? y ¿Dónde? se repuebla. Se describe la información disponible así como la necesaria a fin de facilitar su investigación y gestión.Destaca la naturaleza protectora de estas masas y como consecuencia la escasez de información sobre las mismas. Aspectos relativos a la evolución temporal del proceso, la naturaleza de la roca madre, métodos de preparación del terreno y densidad de plantación son detallados, evidenciándose la necesidad de un sistema de información geográfica como herramienta básica para sistematizar y analizar la información de lo que debe considerarse como el mayor experimento ecológico en extensión a que se han sometido los ecosistemas afectados. Se discuten las necesidades y limitaciones a la hora de gestionar esta realidad, a fin de obtener el máximo beneficio de este proceso de repoblación.
