SUMMARY A network of 27 GPS sites was implemented in Iran and northern Oman to measure displacements in this part of the Alpine–Himalayan mountain belt. We present and interpret the results of two surveys performed in 1999 September and 2001 October. GPS sites in Oman show northward motion of the Arabian Plate relative to Eurasia slower than the NUVEL‐1A estimates (e.g. 22 ± 2 mm yr−1 at N8°± 5°E instead of 30.5 mm yr−1 at N6°E at Bahrain longitude). We define a GPS Arabia–Eurasia Euler vector of 27.9°± 0.5°N, 19.5°± 1.4°E, 0.41°± 0.1° Myr−1. The Arabia–Eurasia convergence is accommodated differently in eastern and western Iran. East of 58°E, most of the shortening is accommodated by the Makran subduction zone (19.5 ± 2 mm yr−1) and less by the Kopet‐Dag (6.5 ± 2 mm yr−1). West of 58°E, the deformation is distributed in separate fold and thrust belts. At the longitude of Tehran, the Zagros and the Alborz mountain ranges accommodate 6.5 ± 2 mm yr−1 and 8 ± 2 mm yr−1 respectively. The right‐lateral displacement along the Main Recent Fault in the northern Zagros is about 3 ± 2 mm yr−1, smaller than what was generally expected. By contrast, large right‐lateral displacement takes place in northwestern Iran (up to 8 ± mm yr−1). The Central Iranian Block is characterized by coherent plate motion (internal deformation <2 mm yr−1). Sites east of 61°E show very low displacements relative to Eurasia. The kinematic contrast between eastern and western Iran is accommodated by strike‐slip motions along the Lut Block. To the south, the transition zone between Zagros and Makran is under transpression with right‐lateral displacements of 11 ± 2 mm yr−1.

S U M M A RYThe destructive Zirkuh-e-Qa'enat earthquake of 1997 May 10 (M w 7.2, M s 7.3, m b 6.3) produced 125 km of NNW^SSE right-lateral strike-slip surface faulting on the Abiz fault in the Sistan suture zone of eastern Iran: the longest known surface rupture associated with an Iranian earthquake. Analysis of the body-wave seismograms from the main shock shows that rupture occurred in four main subevents, propagating in a sequence from north to south. Although predominantly strike-slip, the orientation of the faulting in each subevent varies, with appreciable reverse components in the northcentral part and at the southern end of the Abiz fault. This change in fault style along the Abiz fault inferred from the seismograms is also seen in the coseismic surface ruptures and the geomorphology. Average coseismic surface displacements were approximately 2 m, implying a static stress drop of only 5 bar (0.5 MPa). The 1997 surface ruptures followed clear traces of late Quaternary slip on the Abiz fault, and for its northern 50 km re-ruptured fault segments that had slipped in previous earthquakes of M s 6.0^6.6 in 1936 and 1979. The 1997 earthquake ruptured the northern end of the N^S right-lateral strike-slip system of the Sistan suture zone, ending where it abuts a system of E^W left-lateral strike-slip faults which have also slipped in large earthquakes during the last 30 years. The earthquakes on this conjugate system of strike-slip faults form a sequence that may have been triggered by the enhancement of stress on one fault as a result of slip on a neighbouring fault. Together, these faults achieve N^S rightlateral shear of deforming Iran against stable western Afghanistan by N^S slip on the right-lateral faults and clockwise rotation of the E^W left-lateral faults.

The Deh-Salm metamorphic Complex (DMC) of the Lut block in East Iran consists of metapelites, amphibolites, marbles, and metasandstones intruded by granite and pegmatites. U-Pb dating of zircon, monazite, xenotime, and titanite by ID-TIMS show that the granitic rocks were emplaced at 166-163 Ma, confirming that the high temperature metamorphism was synchronous with the intrusive activity, and that the region cooled rapidly thereafter. Late-to post-magmatic hydrothermal activity was probably responsible for the late crystallization, at 159.5 Ma, of zircon and titanite in an amphibolite and of monazite in granite. Xenocrystic zircons yield indications for a Carboniferous component in the source, together with a variety of Precambrian ages, which indicate a provenance of the sedimentary protolith from mature continental crust. The timing and rapidity of the events are consistent with evolution of the DMC in a back-arc environment during the Jurassic subduction of the Neotethys Ocean.
