“…Welker starts with a brief overview of the different positions regarding the academic status of lexicography (see Welker 2004: 11 andTarp 2010), making it clear that he himself, contrary to Wiegand (1984), uses the terms theoretical lexicography (or metalexicography) and practical lexicography to denote the theoretical and practical aspects of lexicography, a term which he accepts as a hyperonym of the two other terms. “…This aspect, which falls under what Wiegand (1984: 15) calls the general section, becomes relevant in the consideration of lexicography and its interdisciplinary contacts, also discussed by scholars like Tarp (2000Tarp ( , 2002Tarp ( , 2010 and Hartmann (2005). Theories in fields such as terminology, translation, language teaching and applied linguistics, among others, should be mentioned.…”

“…It assumes that in the context of English dominance, the second and third language speakers of English do not rely on their native languages to conceptualise, develop and/or communicate specialised knowledge. Drawing insights from the theory of lexicographic functions (Bergenholtz andTarp 1995, 2003;Tarp 2000Tarp , 2002Tarp , 2005Tarp , 2008Tarp , 2010, this article seeks to demonstrate that LSP dictionaries in indigenous African languages can play a very significant role in the teaching and practice of various subject fields in which English is currently the main medium of communication. However, role should not be confused with function as defined in the theory of lexicographic functions.…”
