Reflections on talent development in the professions.

Abstract

Chapter 6 (Reyes & Salas) focused on providing a broad view of professional performance through a summary of the historical and recent literature on expert teams and the presentation of cardinal characteristics of expert teams. Chapter 5 (McWilliams, Holding, & Knotek) focused on the development of high performance in two professions: medicine and software engineering. This summary integrates two conceptual models (Feldman, 1994;Subotnik & Jarvin, 2005) to present a new developmental framework that describes the unique contexts of the growth of elite professionals within disciplines that require talent development far beyond their initial entry into and graduation from the academy.
