Reflections on Student, Service User and Carer Involvement in Social Work Research

Abstract: Introduction Researchers are increasingly being asked to include patient engagement in their research programs. Some organizations , such as the UK-based Involve [1], have begun to organize approaches to engage patients in research. This article provides a perspective on front-line involvement of a patient and caregiver in a research project focused on integrated care. My name is Frank Hanson and I have been diagnosed with multiple chronic medical issues. I have been married to my caregiver Rhene for over 50 y… Show more

“…One crucial area in knowledge production in social work is the need for knowledge about service users' experiences (Biskin et al 2013;Fook et al 2011). Professionals want to increase their knowledge about young people's experiences of not having a job or place to study and how the support they receive from the community works in reality.…”

“…They concluded that the most important factors in enhancing research utilisation is to establish clarity in the early stages of defining the problem at hand, and strengthening communication in the agency-researcher partnership during the whole process. Effective universitycommunity research collaborations can improve the communication but this requires considerable effort and understanding of all partners involved (Begun et al 2010;Biskin et al 2013). This means for instance, giving enough space for bilateral talks and round-table discussions (Boelens 2010).…”

“…Although it is increasingly common to position service users as central stakeholders in the research process, this is a relatively recent phenomenon. Interest in public participation in policy has been traced to civil rights, normalisation, community care and community development initiatives of the 1960s and later social movements grounded in disability, mental health, age, and care-experience issues (Beresford, 2002;Biskin et al, 2013;McLaughlin, 2010). Golightley and Holloway (2018) and McLaughlin (2012) point to the 1970s and the work of Mayer and Timms (1970) as the point when service-user engagement in social work practice emerged.…”

“…Social work has a proud tradition of involving service users in practice but it has taken longer to develop in social work education. Although this article focuses primarily on the English experience, there have been similar developments promoting servive user involvement across the four nations in the United Kingdom where service user involvement in social work has become mandated, for example Duffy and Hayes (2012), Duffy et al (2013) in Northern Ireland, Ager et al (2006) in Scotland and Biskin et al (2013) and Morriss et al (2012) in Wales. In 2003 in England it was identified as a key requirement for the approval of all programmes providing the new social work degree (DoH, 2002).…”
