Reflections in gyrotrons with radial output: Consequences for the ITER coaxial gyrotron

Abstract: A theory describing the influence of reflections on operation of gyrotrons with radial output is presented. The theory is used for evaluating the effect of reflections on the operation of the 170 GHz ITER coaxial cavity gyrotron, which is under development in cooperation between EUROATOM Associations (CRPP Lausanne, FZK Karlsruhe, and HUT Helsinki) together with European tube industry (Thales Electron Devices, Velizy, France). It is shown that for optimally chosen external magnetic field value and electron bea… Show more

“…It could be caused by mode competition with the mode reflected. After the reflection, the wave goes through the cally predicted [26] and observed recently with a high-power 300 GHz gyrotron [27]. However, the power modulation could also be caused by a Fabry-Perot ef- fect between the experimental setup and the gyrotron window or by an electron beam instability.…”

“…The theory describing these phenomena has been developed in [6]. Here we mention only briefly that the boundary condition for the outgoing negatively and positively rotating modes can be written in the ordinary form:…”
