This paper explores the implementation of narrative learning in first-year architectural design studios and how it can amplify the making, communicating and reflecting aspects of the study. In particular, this paper examines the estrangement technique, which enables an objective view of a story and its telling. The technique allows the students to detach an existing narrative from its context to be analysed, and then recontextualise it. We focus on the main studio project for the first-semester architecture and interior architecture students in Universitas Indonesia as the context of this study. This paper analyses their process, final outputs, and feedback to see the lesson learned from their perspective. The study suggests that learning narrative framework in architectural design studio supports the students to think systematically. In the end, estrangement technique provides the students with a way to retain some aspects of a narrative while playing with others, producing a fresh view on telling stories through enhancing their ambiguity and interaction between design author and their audience.

This paper explores the idea of encoding as a way of introducing algorithmic thinking to basic design pedagogy. It gives prominence to positioning the basic logic and attitudes of algorithmic learning of design, rather than simply focuses on utilising the computational devices and tools. This paper examines the integration of computation or algorithmic thinking into a basic design studio in the architecture programme at Universitas Indonesia. The integration is conducted through a colour composing exercise that comprises of four major encoding stages: identifying patterns, rulemaking, colouring-composing, and reflection. The findings from this study demonstrate the use of algorithmic thinking as the primary reason to design colour composition in different ways and complexity. The students can point out some underlying concepts and creative strategies of design computing concerning colour composing. The findings of this study indicate the importance of promoting students' understanding of computation that is not merely tools but more into design reasonings and skills.

Abstrak_ Pada kuliah asas dan studio perancangan arsitektur UIN Alauddin Makassar lazim menggunakan metode penelusuran konsep perancangan 2 dimensional dengan media kertas gambar dan sketsa konseptual. Dari isu ini berkaitan dengan fakta bahwa konsep desain 2D yang menggunakan media kertas gambar terbatas hanya merepresentasikan ide bentuk, warna, dan texture dalam desain. Salah satu kelemahan metode ini yaitu keterbatasan mahasiswa untuk mengeksplorasi bentuk-bentuk dan belum akurat dalam merepresentasikan konsep perancangan, sehingga dibutuhkan strategi perkuliahan lain yang lebih representative terhadap proses desain yang dilaksanakan di studio perancangan arsitektur. Agar mahasiswa juga bisa merekam konsepsi orientasi, shading, contour, dan layering secara optimal. Artikel ini membahas pengalaman empiris pengaplikasian metode volumetric study dalam lingkup kampus UIN Alauddin Makassar dalam kerangka strategi peningkatan mutu perkuliahan. Hasil studi kasus pada mata kuliah Asas dan studio perancangan arsitektur 3 untuk mahasiswa semester III, ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa merasa metode volumetrik studi ini dapat membantu dalam penelusuran konsep perancangan.Kata kunci: Volumteric Study; Studio; Perancangan Abstract _ In architectural design studios at UIN Alauddin Makassar, it is common to use the method of tracing the concept in 2-dimensional design mode, by using drawing paper media and conceptual sketches. This issue relates to the fact that the 2D design concept using drawing paper media is limited to only representing the idea of shape, colour and texture in the design. One of the weaknesses of this method is the student's limitation to explore forms and inaccurate representation of design concepts so that another course strategy that is more representative of the design process is needed in an architectural design studio. So that students can also record the conceptions of orientation, shading, contours, and layering optimally. This article discusses the empirical experience of applying the volumetric study method within the UIN Alauddin Makassar campus within the framework of a strategy to improve the quality of lectures. The results of a case study in 3rd architectural design studio course for second years students, it was found that most students felt that the volumetric method of this study could help in tracing design concepts.Keywords: Volumetric Study; Studio; Design
