Reflection of Anxiety in the Characteristics of Evoked EEG Potentials in 10- to 11-Year-Old Children

Abstract: We studied the peculiarities of the amplitude/time parameters of evoked EEG potentials (EPs) and event-related potentials (ERPs) in 10-to 11-year-old children characterized by low and high anxiety levels. The latter levels were estimated using the scale of the manifest anxiety test of Prikhozhan and projective techniques ("HouseTree-Person," HTP, and the Lüscher color test). For children with a high anxiety level, the amplitudes of the following EP components and ERPs were lower than those in low-anxiety child… Show more

“…They showed that the P3 wave for children with high anxiety levels were lower than for those of the same age with low-anxiety levels, suggesting that there are particularities in the functioning of the cerebral systems in anxious individuals. These authors supported the idea that decreased EP amplitudes in high anxiety children reflect insufficient maturity and unbalanced functioning of the brain structures (Éismont et al, 2009 ).…”

“…Regarding the P3, studies have shown an enhancement of the P3 in children with anxiety disorders when they have to process and inhibit irrelevant stimuli that have a strong emotional valence (Éismont et al, 2009 ). These results concur agree with the hypothesis of cortical immaturity.…”

“…Although we found that reduced P300 related to both heightened anxiety and depression, subsequent regression-based results suggested that the initial anxiety and P300 association is better attributed to variance shared with current depressive symptoms. This may be one potential explanation as to the inconsistent findings observed in the anxiety and P300 literature in previous adolescent samples (Éismont et al, 2009;Reeb-Sutherland et al, 2009;Hogan et al, 2007;Baving et al, 2004;Santopetro et al, 2020). Overall, these results highlight the importance of simultaneously investigating current depression and anxiety symptoms.…”
