“…More recent reports also confirm that many resistant A. caninum isolates are described in non-greyhound dog breeds ( Jimenez Castro et al, 2022 Venkatesan et al, 2023 ; Leutenegger et al, 2023a ). Taken together, these observations indicate a wider than expected spread of resistant hookworm isolates and further highlight the need for readily available, and affordable, drug resistance screening tests for veterinary wellness programs ( Jimenez Castro et al, 2022 ; Marsh and Lakritz, 2023 ).…”

“…For other parasite species of dogs and cats, resistance is uncommon. However, recently the spread of multiple anthelmintic resistance in Ancylostoma caninum and single cases of Dipylidium caninum resistance against praziquantel have been shown in the US [ 59 , 62 , 63 ]. The current understanding of resistance in CAPs must be followed up with the aim to limit further onset and spread.…”

“…To date, anthelmintic resistance in canine and feline parasites has been of minor relevance and rather confined to regions and limited in scope, whereas it is a considerable problem in livestock and horses (Raza et al ., 2018 ; von Samson-Himmelstjerna et al ., 2021 ). Recently, an increasing frequency of reports on multiple anthelmintic resistance of Ancylostoma caninum in dog kennels in North America has been addressed as a major concern (Marsh and Lakritz, 2023 ). Moreover, 2 cases of possible praziquantel resistance have been reported in D. caninum -infected dogs in the United States recently (Jesudoss Chelladurai et al ., 2018 ; Loftus et al ., 2022 ), emphasizing the importance of this matter in companion animals as well.…”
