Abstract: We identified RCM criteria for diagnosis of LPLK that correlate well with histopathological findings and that allow differentiation of LPLK from skin cancer.

“…Elongated bright tubular structures (cords) with bulbous projections 17,20,22 were observed with RCM in 14 of 45 (31%) SK at the DEJ (Fig 1); in 5 of these cases (5/45; 11%), cords were only found at the lesion periphery. Papillary dermis.…”

“…21 With dermoscopy, looped vessels Melanophages. In 21 of 45 (47%) SK, bright, roundish to triangular, ill-defined cells, corresponding to melanophages, 18,20,22 were detected singly or in aggregates within the papillary dermis with RCM ( Fig 1). Twelve of the 14 (86%) biopsied SK showed pink and/or gray areas on dermoscopy; in comparison, only 6 of these 14 (43%) SK displayed melanophages on RCM at the level of the papillary dermis, which may be because of the limited depth of imaging with RCM.…”

“…These cells might be melanophages. With RCM they appear as bright, plump, oval or star-shaped cells with no visible nucleus and ill-defined edges [34,35]. This RCM description corresponds highly to the observed plump bright cells surrounding the BCC nests but should be confirmed by immunohistochemical staining.…”
