Refined Satellite Image Orientation in the Free Open-Source Photogrammetric Tools Apero/Micmac

Abstract: ABSTRACT:This publication presents the RPC-based bundle adjustment implemented in the freeware open-source photogrammetric tool Apero/MicMac. The bundle adjustment model is based on some polynomial correction functions, enriched with a physical constraint that introduces the notion of a global sensor rotation into the model. The devised algorithms are evaluated against two datasets consisting of two stereo and a triplet pair of the Pleiades images. Two sets of correction functions and a number of GCPs configur… Show more

“…To develop the DSM, we obtained tri-stereo Pleiades satellite images of 0.5 m-resolution covering the terrace sequence between Xylokastro and Corinth. The open-source software MicMac 54,55 was used to create tie-points, orientate the images and calculate a 0.5 m-resolution DSM, using ground control points at 0 m elevation for several locations along the coastline. To reduce the topographic effects of vegetation, crops and man-made structures, the DSM was downsampled to 2 m resolution (Fig.…”

“…We used Micmac, a free open source software 18,19 , to estimate high-resolution DSMs from two or several Pleiades images. Micmac is a multi-resolution and multi-image method, which implements a coarse-to-fine extension of the maximum-flow image matching algorithm presented in Roy and Cox 20 .…”

“…The calculation of an accurate DSM requests that the configuration of the image acquisition is well known. While any Pleiades image is delivered with an empirical model of the Pleiades sensor at the moment of its acquisition (described by raw polynomial coefficients 19 ), this configuration model is approximate and thus needs to be refined. Micmac performs such refinement by using a bundle adjustment approach.…”

“…Rupnik et al. () examined various GCP configuration scenarios for the bundle adjustment of the Pleiades imagery where the number of GCPs employed in the adjustment and their distribution affected the quality of the sensor's georeferencing. Elkhrachy and El‐Damaty () studied the effect of the number of GCPs with various rectification models on the accuracy of the geometric correction.…”
