Reference values of sniff nasal inspiratory pressure in healthy children

Abstract: Objective To determine reference values of sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP) in healthy children. Methods This cross‐sectional observational study included healthy children aged 6 to 11 years of both sexes. The volunteers underwent a pulmonary function test to rule out respiratory disorders. Respiratory muscle strength was measured using maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), respectively, with MIP close to functional residual capacity (FRC) and residual volume, while M… Show more

“…SNIP has a strong correlation with MIP; however, it usually is higher than MIP 37 . SNIP is considered a highly reproducible, volitional, easy to perform maneuver in children starting at the age of 6 years, with normative data, 37,38 where in the occluded nostril, the nasal pressure is obtained after forced inspiration from FRC 39 . There are notable limitations to the accuracy of SNIP in populations with severe obstructive disease or severe neuromuscular disease.…”

“…The sample consisted of healthy children of both sexes, aged 6 to 11 years, who were recruited from public schools in the city of Natal/RN, Brazil. This study was a secondary analysis of previously published data regarding reference values for SNIP in children 11 .…”

“…All children were asked to place the plug in the nostril, through which air passed more freely, and to perform a short, sharp inspiratory effort through the nostril, in the sitting position and with the lips closed 2 . This maneuver was performed near functional residual capacity, and a passive relaxation immediately after reaching the peak pressure was requested 11,19 . All children performed 12 maneuvers, with a 30 s rest between each.…”

“…SNIP involves a short sharp, voluntary inspiratory maneuver measured through a plug occluding one nostril while the sniff is performed using the contralateral nostril 5,11 . Because there is a signi cant learning effect on the performance of SNIP, several maneuvers are required, with a plateau usually reached after 5 to 10 measurements in adults 4 .…”
