Reference values for wrist-worn accelerometer physical activity metrics in England children and adolescents

Abstract: Background Over the last decade use of raw acceleration metrics to assess physical activity has increased. Metrics such as Euclidean Norm Minus One (ENMO), and Mean Amplitude Deviation (MAD) can be used to generate metrics which describe physical activity volume (average acceleration), intensity distribution (intensity gradient), and intensity of the most active periods (MX metrics) of the day. Presently, relatively little comparative data for these metrics exists in youth. To address this need… Show more

“…They may thus be an important complement to the current PA guidelines by the WHO, which are predominantly questionnaire-based (43). This may have relevant implications for future research (PA surveillance [3] and epidemiology [5]) but also for clinical practice (2).…”

“…Further data such as the intercept and R 2 are presented in Table 1 to describe the regression models. Greater IG values (less negative) reflect a more favorable intensity profile with more time spent at moderate and high intensities and vice versa (2). Both metrics are explained graphically in Supplemental Figure 1 (Supplemental Digital Content 2, Illustration of IG and AvAcc, http://links.lww.com/ MSS/C917).…”
