Reference implementation for open scientometric indicators (ROSI)

Abstract: Within the project "Reference implementation for Open Scientometric Indicators" (ROSI), new assessments and visualizations of conventional and alternative metrics (altmetrics) will be developed and their effect on researchers will be investigated. For this purpose, a reference implementation based on the open source research information system VIVO will be developed in which various metrics are combined with data from different openly licensed sources. In order to develop the requirements of the target groups,… Show more

“…The openness of scientometric data is a topic that gets more and more attention among the scholarly community , for example, regarding the openness of lists of references (Mugnaini et al, 2021;Sugimoto et al, 2018) or the availability of abstracts from publications (Tay et al, 2020) (Cagan, 2013), the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics (Hicks et al, 2015), and the Hong Kong Principles for assessing researchers (Moher et al, 2020) Our study is part of a larger project on iterative software development based on user friendly design (Hauschke et al, 2018), the ROSI project (see section 1.3).…”

“…For that, we formulated the following research question: Which scientometric data sources are available for research purposes? First, we evaluated the data sources internally as part of the research project "Reference Implementation for Open Scientometric Indicators" (ROSI) (Hauschke et al, 2018) and later decided to share our findings in the form of the RSDS 1 . The registry is a service to scientometricians, institutional researchers, librarians, practitioners, policy makers, students and other stakeholders with an interest in scientometrics who would like to decide which data sources to use in research projects, to search for or add new data sources.…”

“…Altmetric.com is one of the largest altmetric data aggregators in terms of its use in scientific publications and studies. Other aggregators include Crossref Event Data (CED), PlumX, and the US Public Library of Science's (PLOS) article-level metrics (ALM), while other open-source projects developed visualizations of altmetrics (Hauschke et al, 2018).…”

“…Additionally, another study compared the mentions of publications on blogs and news sites among three altmetric data aggregators, namely PlumX, Altmetric.com, and Crossref Event Data (CED) (Ortega, 2020). CED also provides an Application Programming Interface (API) that may be used by others to build their own scientometric data services (Hauschke et al, 2018). Publications on blogs and news sites seem to be mentioned less frequently compared to other altmetric sources, and Altmetric.com has the highest coverage compared to the other data aggregators (Ortega, 2020).…”
