Reference Diameters of the Abdominal Aorta and Iliac Arteries in the Korean Population

Abstract: PurposeIt is important to know the normal diameter of artery throughout the body so that clinicians are able to determine when an artery becomes aneurysmal. However, there are no previous studies on the normal diameter of arteries in the general Korean population. The purpose of this article is to determine the normal reference diameters of the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries in the Korean population.Materials and MethodsWe recruited the study population from three cities in Korea for the abdominal aortic a… Show more

“…It is widely accepted that the aorta and common carotids dilate, thicken and non-uniformly elongate with ageing [7,[21][22][23], while the behaviour of medium vessels is still controversial [24]. In this respect, since the majority of literature does not find any significant correlation [25,26], we choose to keep the geometrical characteristics of the muscular arteries unchanged with age.…”

“…Abdominal aorta aneurysms are not harmful as long as there are no complications because symptoms are not produced by enlargement in diameter alone unless overexpansion occurs. Aortic dissection and rupture can also be seen in abdominal aorta due to aortic diameter and expansion rate [4]. The probability of aneurysm occurrence is low during the first two decades of life and increases usually after the third decade [5].…”
