Reemergence of Measles in the Americas: The Genotype B3 2011–2012 Outbreak in Ecuador

Abstract: This study characterizes a measles outbreak which occurred in Ecuador in 2011–2012, analyzing data from 3700 suspected cases of measles reported to Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health. The study population had a large age range and included 333 confirmed cases of measles. The greatest number of cases were found in the <1 year (32.43%, n = 108) and 1–4 year (30.03%, n = 100) age-groups. Compared to Mestizos, indigenous people had the highest number of cases (68.2%, n = 227), as well as a higher risk of infectio… Show more

“…The measles containment strategies (16) implemented during this outbreak could serve as a guide on how to halt propagation of the disease in nonimmunized subpopulations in elimination settings. In the World Health Organization's Region of the Americas, for example, despite 1-dose measles vaccine coverage being maintained at 90% or more since 1998 (31) and a declaration of measles elimination in 2016 (32), recent outbreaks reported in Ecuador (33), Canada (34), the United States (1,35), and Brazil (36) indicate that coverage is not homogenous. These outbreaks ranged considerably in size and duration (147-1,065 confirmed measles cases and durations of 9 weeks to 1.5 years) and were characterized by varying containment efforts.…”

“…Globally, the annual incidence of measles decreased by 75.0% from 146 to 36 cases per million population during 2000–2015, and the annual estimated measles deaths decreased by 79.0% from 651,600 to 134,200 [8]. Recent outbreaks have been reported in North America [9, 10], South America [11], Europe [12, 13], Africa [14], and Asia [1517].…”

“…Factors which might also have contributed to this multiplied hazard consist of: poor get right of entry to preventive offerings, living in far flung geographic locations that may hinder outreach software efforts, the difficulty of retaining vaccine refrigeration chains, , cultural variations, poverty and malnourishment (Le et al, 2017).…”
