Reef fish assemblage and zoogeographic affinities of a scarcely known region of the western equatorial Atlantic

Abstract: Based on data from 151 underwater surveys (scuba) between 2002 and 2007, the present study assessed the reef fish fauna from a scarcely known region on the north-eastern Brazilian coast (Ceará State). A checklist of 179 taxa is provided and the zoogeographic patterns are analysed and discussed, including six other localities. Based only on assemblage composition, the reef fish fauna from Ceará showed a strong resemblance (73%) with the reefs of Risca do Zumbi (RN) and Paraiba (PB). The data from the visual cen… Show more

“…The occurrence of MEs in the Brazilian equatorial margin, in an area not under Amazon River influence, has been recently described (Almeida, Vital, & Gomes, ; Silva et al., ; Soares, Davis, Paiva, et al, ). Freitas and Lotufo (2015) described reef fishes in a mesophotic reef (36 m), and Soares, Davis, Paiva, et al. () described reef fishes and scleractinian corals at depths of 37 m. Both articles reported the presence of a mosaic of benthic habitats, composed of carbonate sediment deposits and reef outcrops located in incised shelf valleys off the Ceará state coast.…”

“…Despite a substantial increase in knowledge about Atlantic reef fish biogeography and evolution (Floeter et al., ), several areas in the SWA remained unknown and poorly studied until recently (Anderson et al., ; Freitas & Lotufo, ; Pinheiro, Joyeux, & Moura, ; Pinheiro, Mazzei et al., ). Therefore, several questions on the biogeography and evolutionary processes that shaped the reef fish fauna in the SWA are still unresolved.…”

“…For interpretation of the biogeographic affinities of the species, analysis of the following regions in Eschmeyer and Fricke's catalog of fishes (2016) was used: WA = Western Atlantic, EA = Eastern Atlantic, CIRC = Circumtropical, and IS = Invasive species (De Freitas & Lotufo, 2014).…”
