“…Under normal conditions, Sertoli cells are involved in the phagocytosis of discarded residual bodies and germ cells that degenerate in the normal course of spermatogenesis as well as in clearing up apoptotic germ cells (Russell et al, 1990). The proliferation of Sertoli cells found in this study could be interpreted as an increased need to clear the degenerated germ cells, as a result of the adverse effect of some deleterious agent such as organotins, heavy metals or estrogenic compounds (Chen et al, 2008;Dyer, 2007;Miles-Richardson et al, 1999a,b). GSI of females was very similar in all stations except from stations NJ, MJ and MR where the lowest values of GSI were recorded.…”

“…The number of cells in the seminiferous tubules is determined by a dynamic balance between cells proliferation and apoptotic cell death. Any imbalance of the two processes may result in histological changes in the seminiferous epithelium [47], including the increased number of multinucleated giant cells.…”

“…Immature male mice receiving a single dose of TBT presented a delay in lumen formation in seminiferous tubules and increased numbers of apoptotic germ cells inside the tubules, but not in Leydig cells (40). Reduced serum testosterone levels (16,40,43,44) and down-regulated expression of P450scc (cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme complex), P450 (for example, 17α-hydroxylase), 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD were also observed (38). However, in contrast, another study reported an increase of serum testosterone (21).…”

“…Several studies addressing the effect of TBT on male reproductive functions have been reported (16,21,(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). A study conducted on male rats over two generations showed that testis, epididymis, ventral prostate, and body weight decreased in all groups, but mainly in the group treated with a dietary concentration of 125 mg TBTCl per g diet (21).…”
