Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from feed supply chains by utilizing regionally produced protein sources: the case of Austrian dairy production

Abstract: Utilization of locally produced APRFs shows clear advantages in terms of GHGE. Balanced mixtures of APRFs may offer specific benefits, as they allow for a combination of desirable nutritional value and reduced GHGE.

“…The emission of ammonia levels reached also contributes to the protection of the atmosphere in the small farming (Haas et al, 2001, Geier et al, 1998. Emissions of greenhouse gases range is moderate, as it has been demonstrated in several national research (Petersen et al, 2005;Robertson et al, 2000;Hörtenhuber et al, 2010). …”

“…organic farming carries a number of environmental benefits. Soil is the largest carbon-emitting agent in the production process (Hörtenhuber et al, 2010). In the production process (for example in the case of dairy or bakery products), agricultural activities have the biggest CO2 emissions, so in the case of dairy products carbon dioxide emissions are 10-21% less, in the case of bakery products 25% and in the case of vegetable production 10-35% than with traditional means of preparation, respectively.…”

“…Sweden imports soya beans mainly from South America (FAOSTAT, 2014), where its production has in several studies been linked to deforestation and associated GHG emissions (Barona et al, 2010). The connection to deforestation has been a major reason behind an increased effort to replace imported soya meal with locally available protein crops (Hortenhuber et al, 2011;Meul et al, 2012).…”

“…Analysing the environmental impacts of protein feed substitutions is not new (Lehuger et al, 2009;Hortenhuber et al, 2011;Mogensen et al, 2012). However, in our paper we extend the analysis to cover not only feed production but also the impact of protein feed substitution on emissions from animal production.…”
