Reduction in orofacial clefts following folic acid fortification of the U.S. grain supply

Abstract: reduce the occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs). We evaluated the impact of folic acid fortification on orofacial clefts using United States birth certificate data for 45 states and the District of Columbia. METHODS: Prevalence ratios (PRs) were calculated comparing orofacial cleft prevalence among births prefortification (1/ 1990-12/1996) and postfortification (10/1998-12/2002), based on fortification status at conception. The JoinPoint Regression Program and exponentially weighted moving average charts… Show more

“…35,36 In addition, a recent review of US birth certificates also showed a decrease in the prevalence rates for orofacial clefts after folic acid fortification. 37 Prevention programs have been developed to reduce the recurrence of neural tube defects by targeting families with an affected child. 38,39 Collection of family history reports among these families provides an opportunity to target additional relatives who might benefit from directed interventions to reduce the occurrence of these defects.…”

“…Reduction of orofacial clefts risk following mandatory fortification of food was observed by several studies. This inverse association was statistically significant in some of these researches [12,13,14] and insignificant in others [15,16,17].…”
