Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease of primarily premature infants that results from an imbalance between lung injury and repair in the developing lung. BPD is the most common respiratory morbidity in preterm infants, which affects nearly 10, 000 neonates each year in the United States. Over the last two decades, the incidence of BPD has largely been unchanged; however, the pathophysiology has changed with the substantial improvement in the respiratory management of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. Here we have attempted to comprehensively review and summarize the current literature on the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of BPD. Our goal is to provide insight to help further progress in preventing and managing severe BPD in the ELBW infants.

Background/Aims: Cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) during pregnancy is a well-recognized health hazard that causes placental damage. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has been reported to protect multiple organs from injury. However, the protective effects of H₂S have not been tested in the placenta. This study aimed to explore the potential of H₂S in protecting placenta against oxidative injury induced by CSE during pregnancy and the possible underlying mechanisms. Methods: Pregnant SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: NaCl, NaHS (a donor of H₂S), CSE and CSE+NaHS. Placental oxidative damage was detected by 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) stain and malondialdehyde (MDA) assay. Placental redox status was assessed by measuring reactive oxygen species (ROS), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and glutathione (GSH) levels, as well as copper/zinc SOD (SOD1), manganese SOD (SOD2), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and expressions. Meanwhile, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, real-time PCR and Western blot. Results: We found that NaHS markedly reduced the elevated levels of 8-OHdG and MDA induced by CSE. Further, NaHS treatment effectively mitigated CSE-induced placental redox imbalance by inhibiting ROS production, restoring T-AOC level, increasing GSH/GSSG ratio, and augmenting SOD1 SOD2, CAT and GPx activities and expressions. More notably, NaHS administration also reversed the aberrant decrease of Nrf2 due to CSE in rat placentas. Conclusion: Our data demonstrate that H₂S can protect against CSE-induced placental oxidative damage probably by alleviating redox imbalance via Nrf2 pathway.

ÖzetSigara vb. tütün mamullerine olan alışkanlığın önlenebilmesi/azaltılması amacıyla tüm dünyada bir dizi araştırma/çalışma sonucu önlem/eylem planları ortaya konulmuştur. Ülkemiz de, bu uluslararası eylem planlarının tamamını ilk uygulayan ülke olarak kayıtlara geçmiştir. Bu düzenlemelerden en önemlilerinden biri de sigara fiyatlarında gerçekleştirilen artışlar ile sigaranın çekiciliğinin azaltılması yönündedir. Sigara fiyatlarının artması, sigarayı bırakma çabası veya ikame/ucuz ürün arayışları ile sonuçlanabilmektedir. Bu arayışlardaki, genel eğilimlerin analizi edilmesinde internet aramalarının kullanılması mümkündür. Bu çalışmada, Google Trends'den sağlanan verilerden yola çıkılarak; ülkemizde 2015 ve 2016 yıllarında sigaraya yapılan zamlar sonrası, bu arayışların niteliği ve boyutu analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın istatistiksel bulguları ışığında; zam sonucu ülkemizde davranış arayışlarının ekseriyetinin sigarayı bırakmak yerine ucuz ve ikame ürün aramak yönünde olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: sigara zamları, internet aramaları, davranış değiştirme Abstract As being the result a series of research/study, several prevention/action plans has been implemented to avoid/decrease the habits of cigarette and similar tobacco products through the World. Our country has been regarded as the first country implementing these international action plans, entirely. In this context, one of the most important arrangements has been decreasing the attractiveness of smoking by increasing the prices of them. The increase in the cigarette prices may end with attempts to quit smoking or to find an alternative/cheaper product. The general trend in this search behavior can be analyzed via the analysis of internet searches. In this study, by the use of the data provided by Google Trends, the qualification and magnitude of this search behavior after the price increase realized in 2015 and 2016 is analyzed. In the light of the statistical findings; it is understood that, price increases in our country generally ends with finding cheaper or substitute products instead of quitting the cigarettes.
