Reducing smoking

Abstract: SummaryIn a double-blind randomised trial, 122 female smokers undergoing elective surgery were allocated to receive one of two prerecorded messages while fully anaesthetised. The active message was designed to encourage them to give up smoking whilst the control message was the same voice counting numbers. No patient could recall hearing the tape. Patients were asked about their postoperative smoking behaviour one month later. Significantly more of those who had received the active tape had stopped or reduced … Show more

“…If one (per au) goal of a smoking cessation program is to decrease overall smoking days, providing NRT for longer periods could prove successful. Previous studies have demonstrated that reductions in other populations can be maintained for years 25 . Given the opportunity, many smokers who reduce but do not quit smoking may also use NRT for prolonged periods, particularly if there is a symptomatic benefit 26 .…”

“…A variety of techniques have been proposed to assist people to quit smoking, and there have been trials suggesting roles for hypnosis and suggestion-based methods for smoking cessation 812. Studies of smoking-cessation messages administered by tape recordings (suggestive audio-therapy) delivered during general anesthesia have produced variable results 1315. Myles14 found significant reductions in overall amount of smoking in patients randomized to intervention in one study, but Myles et al15 failed to demonstrate significant changes in smoking in a second trial.…”
