Reducing Parenting Stress in Families With Irritable Infants

Abstract: Initial parenting stress levels were high in all participants. Parent feedback at the exit interview indicated that the nurse visits for data collection were also viewed as helpful in reducing the stress level associated with parenting these irritable infants. This home-based program was perceived as helpful in improving the interactions between parents and their irritable infants.

“…3 In three meta-analyses current medical treatments are evaluated as either ineffi cient (simethicone) or as having serious side effects like seizures, asphyxia and death [3][4][5] (dicyclomine, presently withheld by the manufacturer). In spite of the good prognosis of infantile colic with full spontaneous recovery, 6 colic inhibits optimal family relations [7][8][9] and increases the risk of child abuse. “…4 Colic affects 3-28% of infants, causing considerable stress and concern for parents. 5 The pathogenesis of the condition remains elusive, although evidence suggests multiple independent causes. 3 Despite forty years of research, the etiology of infantile colic remains non-conclusive.…”
