Reducing Outpatient Waiting Time: A Simulation Modeling Approach

Abstract: Objectives:The objective of this study was to provide a model for reducing outpatient waiting time by using simulation. Materials and Methods: A simulation model was constructed by using the data of arrival time, service time and flow of 357 patients referred to orthopedic clinic of a general teaching hospital in Tehran. The simulation model was validated before constructing different scenarios. Results: In this study 10 scenarios were presented for reducing outpatient waiting time. Patients waiting time was d… Show more

“…Therefore, the referrals are distributed across the added hours and the waiting time and queues will be shorter. The result of Aeenparast et al (17) indicating that the patients' waiting time for examination can be reduced by increasing physicians' working hours were in line with those of the present study.…”

“…The simulation results show a real picture of a system to the researchers through providing its dynamic analysis. This process improves the analyst's understanding of the real relationships of the system more accurately (17,19).…”

“…There is significance on the need to change in the way service offered by hospital by adapting ehealth technologies in order to reach the national vision of applying information and communication technologies in healthcare sector. In one of the study, it was reported waiting time for patients who attended their disability hospital appointments before receiving treatment was reduced due to enhancement of system they implemented for triage patient appointment [1]. Still today in most of the countries, a handwritten medical prescription is provided by doctor after direct consultation with patient.…”

“…Discrete event simulation is a promising tool for investigating improvements in operational efficiency and in reducing costs. [205][206][207] Aeenparast et al (2013) argued that, based on a discrete event simulation, the best way to decrease waiting times is to change physicians' working times and patients' admission times in a way that ensures they are at the hospital at the same time (so that physicians do not arrive late and patients do not arrive early) 205 . Lee et al (2013) 208 looked at appointment scheduling for outpatient clinics by using a discrete event simulation in a different way.…”
