Reducing obsolescence practices from a product-oriented PSS perspective: A research agenda

Abstract: This conceptual article reviews current knowledge across relevant disciplines and proposes a research agenda related to the capacity of product-oriented product–service systems (PSS) – which are servitization practices, similar to product–service bundling – to mitigate the obsolescence problem of durable products (in the form of deliberate curtailment of product lifespans or symbolic devaluation of devices). Taking both consumer and company perspectives on this possibility, this study outlines paths for resear… Show more

“…Again, this means including an anticipation of product instances which will be produced, but also product instances decommissioned over time to close cycles. Specific focus on product obsolescence supports this view [114], covering even building industries where a shift from construction site-oriented building toward products manufacturing is envisioned [11,115]. This means stepping beyond Product-as-a-Service business models, creating value in EoL.…”

“…CE appears to be a pivotal concept for promoting new business models based on an extended product lifespan and the recirculation of materials ( Dahmani et al., 2021 ). The servitization of products through CE is also a strategy to address product obsolescence ( Munten et al., 2021 ). In recent years, product durability has gained relevance since it supports the development of PSS and business models based on using a product as a service (renting, leasing) and the extended lifespan of products (reuse, refurbish, remanufacturing).…”

“…The latter stages of the DoI decision process focus on adopters who have reached the implementation stage, putting the innovation into practice, and then the confirmation stage which can have one of two outcomes: 1) continue and retain the innovation, recognising the benefits, integrating it into routine and promoting it to others; or 2) discontinue the use of the innovation (Rogers, 2003 p199). From a sustainability perspective, there has been a growing interest in 1) the continuance of innovations, wanting to reduce waste and avoid obsolescence (Munten et al, 2021;van den Berge et al, 2021). Such literature predominantly focuses on the retention of products (e.g.…”
